How to Find Relief From Rashes

by Dr Susan Jewell MD

We have all experienced at least one episode of rash in our lifetime. Rashes normally heal on their own over a short period and do not require a visit to the doctor’s office or ER, however, there are certain conditions in which the rash was caused by a severe allergic reaction and then progresses to a life-threatening situation that requires immediate medical attention. This article will give some tips and advice on what you should do to find relief from rashes.

1 Rashes can be caused by many factors–metals, food, detergents, jewelry and medications can all cause allergic reaction and rashes in certain individuals. It is recommended that you see a dermatologist and have an allergy test to see if you have an allergy to some very common types of allergens.

2 Be cautious when you wear rubber gloves or items that can contain latex in the composition since some people are allergic to latex. Also be careful if you have an allergy to a particular metal. Certain cheap jewelery has nickel or chrome added to the silver or gold, and this could cause severe allergic reactions in some people. If you have reactions, stop wearing the jewelery and change to pure gold or silver items.

3 There are ways to find relief from rashes. Rub in cortisone cream to stop the itching. Start with 1 percent cortisone cream that you can purchase at a local drugstore. If this does not control the itchiness or the symptoms are getting worse, see your doctor for a stronger cortisone medication.

4 Find ways to soothe the rash from the itchiness and irritation. Try a compress of cloth soaked in a mix of water and astringent. Place the mixture in the fridge for half an hour to make it cold. This also helps to temporarily reduce the irritation and itchiness from the rash.

5 Bathing in a mixture of oatmeal and aromatic bath oil will reduce the itchiness and stress from the rash.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don’t wear synthetic clothing if you perspire a lot or it’s a very hot day.
  • Don’t wear tight clothing or clothing that has elastic stretch waistbands. This is a common cause of rubber rashes. Wear clothing made of cotton spandex.
